Article Brief Description:
A guide to keeping your Adobe software products up-to-date

Primary Adobe Product List:

  1. (Acrobat and Reader 10.1.1 or earlier) In Multimedia Trust preferences, you can specify whether to play embedded multimedia files in trusted or non trusted PDF documents. A trusted document is a document that you or an author you trust has approved. By setting your permissions to play multimedia only in trusted documents, you can prevent programs, macros, and viruses from potentially damaging.
  2. But the CS5 XMP Panels 3.1.0 update and the Adobe Player for Embedding 3.1.0 Update are installing fine here. I do not process any Adobe CS5 update through AAMEE - I just let munki install them directly.

Adobe does not mention anything in regards to Android 3.1 (also codenamed Honeycomb), which was just released earlier this week. Here's what's specifically new in version 10.3 for Android.

Adobe Acrobat Professional / Reader

Adobe Acrobat Professional / Reader 2015(v15)/2017(v17)/2019(v19)/2020(v20)/DC
NOTE: Acrobat 2015 became end of life on 07/04/2020.
NOTE: Acrobat 2017 becomes end of life on 06/06/2022.
NOTE: All current and supported versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro / Reader now require macOS 10.12 or later. If you are running OS X 10.11 or earlier and cannot upgrade your macOS, you are highly recommended to remove all versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro/Reader from your computer, unless you only open PDFs from trusted sources.
  • Check for an update now: Open Reader/Acrobat and select 'Check for Updates' from the 'Help' menu.
  • Turn on Automatic Updates: Open Reader/Acrobat and go to the Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat menu > Preferences > select 'Updater' from the lis on the left, if available, and make sure 'Automatically install updates' or 'Automatically download updates, but let me choose when to install them' is selected/TICKED on the right.
  • NOTE: Adobe Acrobat 'Reader' DC/2015 and later have no options for installing updates - they are checked for, downloaded and installed automatically in the background. Acrobat 'Pro' only has one option 'Automatically install updates' which can be either switched on or off.
  • Download updates manually from the Adobe updates web site or the Adobe FTP site.
  • Acrobat Pro updates = ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/mac/
  • Acrobat Reader updates = ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/mac/
NOTE: Although Acrobat Professional may have been installed as part of Creative Suite, the Creative Suite updater does not check for updates to Acrobat Professional! however, Creative Cloud and the Adobe Application Manager do check for updates to Acrobat Professional.
Acrobat Standard/Professional/Reader vXI(11) and earlier
NOTE: Acrobat v11 became end of life on 15/10/2017. The Acrobat XI (11) auto-update feature no longer works on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - this is a known problem for all 10.6 users so Acrobat/Reader updates must be installed manually - Acrobat updates are usually cumulative (combo type) updates so you can install the latest update version to get all the security updates. Updates can be downloaded manually via the Adobe FTP web site (you can navigate it and download from it using a normal web browser) - see links above.
NOTE: Acrobat v10 became end of life on 15/11/2015.
NOTE: Acrobat v9 became end of life on 26/06/2013.
  • These versions are no longer supported/updated so if your computer supports one you are highly recommended to upgrade and/or stay secure.
  • Download updates manually from the Adobe updates web site or the Adobe FTP site.
Adobe PDFViewer (web browser plug-in)
The Adobe PDFViewer web browser plug-in is installed by Acrobat v8 (or later) Reader or Professional version and works with Apple's Safari.
  • To keep the Adobe PDFViewer web browser plug-in up-to-date simply make sure your Acrobat Professional / Reader software is up-to-date.
NOTE: There are potential problems with some versions of the Adobe PDFViewer if you are running Safari in Rosetta or 64 bit mode so you might want to disable the PDF Viewer. Or you can disable it for security reasons (if you trust Apple to keep their PDF viewing software more up-to-date than Adobe).
  • There is no point in deleting the Adobe PDFViewer plug-in from the Macintosh HD > Library > Internet Plug-Ins folder as the 'self-repair' feature of Acrobat / Reader will just reinstall it!
  • To disable the Adobe PDFViewer plug-in start Acrobat or Adobe Reader, go to Preferences > Internet and untick the 'Display PDF in Browser' option. This will cause any PDF to display inside the Safari window using its native PDF viewer but note that Apple's PDF Viewer may not support all Adobe PDF workflow features such as Collaboration or some of the more complex Forms.

Staying Secure With Adobe Acrobat

Third party alternatives to Acrobat Pro are available in our Alternative Products To Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud article.

This issue was addressed on October 4, 2012. More details are available in this security advisory.

Adobe Player For Embedding 3.1 Mac Os

Adobe investigated what appeared to be the inappropriate use of an Adobe code signing certificate for Windows. We revoked the impacted certificate on October 4 2012 for all software code signed after July 10 2012. Customers should not notice anything out of the ordinary during the certificate revocation process.

Is your Adobe software vulnerable because of this issue? No. This issue has no impact on the security of your genuine Adobe software. Are there other security risks to you? We have strong reason to believe that this issue does not present a general security risk.

The revocation of the certificate affects the Windows platform and three Adobe AIR applications* that run on both Windows and Mac OS. The revocation does not impact any other Adobe software for Mac OS or other platforms.

Adobe issued updates for all impacted products to provide customers with software code signed using a new digital certificate.

For more information, read the FAQ or ask a question.

If you haven't installed Adobe software or updates after July 10 2012, you don't need to do anything.
