3.7 Service and Updates It is essential that repairs and updates are only carried out by an authorised Naim retailer or at the factory by Naim itself. Many components are custom made, tested or matched and appropriate replacements are often unobtainable from other sources. Direct contact to Naim for service or update information. Naim CD3.5 cd player Received a full service in January from Witch Hat Audio I had both this & a Nait 3 serviced prior to listing them, the amp has since been spoken for. The player worked perfectly prior to service but felt I may as well have both done at the same time, the amp had developed an earth issue, now resolved.

CD Players (CD3.5, CDX, CDS2, CD5, CDX2)

Introduction

This PIC (programmable integrated circuit) update to the CD3.5, CDX, CDS2, CD5 and CDX2 Compact Disc Players improves their ability to play “copy protected” compact discs that do not comply with the Philips/Sony “Red Book” standard. The new PIC also provides some user interface and play order programming enhancements. These are described below. Updates should only be undertaken by authorised Naim distributors or dealers.

The update procedures all require removal of the outer case or top panel, and removal and replacement of the socket mounted PIC.

To complete the update procedures you will need the update kit comprising a replacement PIC and PIC removal tool and an earth strap. No. 1 and No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdrivers and 2.5mm and 4mm allen keys, will also be required to disassemble the player casework.

WARNINGS

!SWITCH OFF AND DISCONNECT THE PLAYER FROM THE SYSTEM AND MAINS/POWER SUPPLY BEFORE YOU BEGIN.

!PLACE THE PLAYER ON A CLEAN WORK BENCH WITH A PROTECTIVE SURFACE BEFORE COMMENCING DISASSEMBLY.

!REFIT THE CD3.5 AND CD5 TRANSIT SCREWS BEFORE BEGINNING.

!REFIT THE CDX AND CDX2 TRANSIT SCREWS AND REMOVE THEM ONLY WHEN YOU ARE READY TO REMOVE THE OUTER CASE. TAKE CARE THEN THAT THE CD DRAWER DOES NOT FALL OPEN.

!DO NOT INVERT THE CDS2. WORK FROM UNDERNEATH WHEN REMOVING THE CASE SCREWS.

Enhancements

The PIC update brings each player up to the user interface and play order programming feature set of CD players manufactured after February 2003 (contact the Naim Service Department for exact serial numbers).

User Interface

Front Panel Control

This multi-function mode provides an alternative front panel interface in which fast forward, fast reverse and pause are selected by pressing and holding next, previous and play respectively.

To select multi function mode press and hold next while the player is switched on. To select the standard control mode press and hold previous while the player is switched on.

Static Pause

Naim Cd3 Service Manual Pdf

If a player is paused for more than 10 minutes it will enter “static pause” mode in which the transport laser deactivates and the disc stops spinning. The player can be left in static pause indefinitely. Deselection of static pause works in the normal way.

Display Defaults

Regardless of the selected display mode (track, time or off) the display will default to time when fast forward or fast reverse are operated or total programmed or disc time when stopped.

Play Order Programming

!USE THE ANTI-STATIC EARTH STRAP SUPPLIED IN THE

UPDATE KIT.

Memory Limit

The play order program memory is now limited to 99 events (program or delete) rather than the previous 20.

Preset Play Orders

Random and reverse play orders can now be selected from the remote handset (from stop with no play order already in place). Press prog followed by 1 for random play or prog followed by 2 for reverse play.

Stop Function

Pressing and holding stop when a play order is

programmed will clear the play order but not reset the

display. A further press and hold of stop will reset the

1

display.

Update Procedure

Disassembly

1.Ensure that the transit screws are fitted throughout the update procedure. Invert the player on a clean work surface covered with a protective material - a towel for example

2.Identify the top cover fixings to be removed from the diagram below. A diagram on the underside of the CD3.5 additionally illustrates one of two types of top cover to chassis fixing that may be present on your player. Type One fixing is four reusable plastic rivets. Type Two fixing is four self tapping screws with plastic bushes.

Service

For Type One fixing the male and female parts of each plastic rivet must be prised apart and removed from the cover. To do this, insert a flat bladed screwdriver or sidecutters underneath the domed head of each rivet and lever upwards removing the pin. Carry out the same levering procedure to remove the female part of each rivet. The rivets must be reused so do not discard them. Put them safely to one side.

For Type Two fixing use a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver to remove the four bushed self-tapping screws. Place the screws and bushes safely to one side.

3.Using a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver remove the earth screw and serrated washer located between the left hand side top cover fixings. Place the screw and washer safely to one side.

4.Hold the player at the front and back to retain the chassis, top cover and CD drawer in place and turn it over.

5.With the player on the work surface facing away from you slide the top cover towards you away from the chassis and lift it clear. Put the top cover safely to one side.

PIC Replacement

6.Attach the earth strap around your left wrist (if right handed) and connect its clip to any prominent internal unpainted metallic feature of the chassis.

7.Use the diagram below to identify the PIC Socket and PIC. Note the PIC orientation in the socket. There is a semicircular indent and a dot located at one end of the PIC. The replacement PIC must be inserted with the same orientation.

8.Use the PIC extraction tool, gripping the ends of the PIC, to lift it from its socket. Discard the PIC.

9.Place the replacement PIC squarely into the socket so that its “legs” line up with the individual sockets. ENSURE CORRECT PIC ORIENTATION. Apply mild thumb pressure to push the PIC into the socket so that it is fully home. Remove the earth strap.

Reassembly

10.Slide the top panel back into place and, gripping the player at the front and back to retain the chassis, top cover and CD drawer in place, turn it over.

11.Align the top cover to chassis fixing holes and either refit the plastic rivets by pressing the male section into the female or insert and tighten the bushed self tapping screws. Refit the earthing screw and washer.

12.Your CD3.5 has now been updated. Remove the transit screws, re-connect it to the system and mains supply, and switch on. The PIC update provides some enhanced programming and user interface features. These are described on Page 1.
